How smoking affect the society

Smoking has been associated as a negative behaviour. Although the parties who linked with the cigarette industries have tried effortlessly to show the public how cool and “macho” smoking is, people nowadays has been educated enough to determine which is good and which is bad.

Nevertheless, there are always new smokers come out from anywhere. Although the government has banned any advertisement on smoking from entering the mass media, the people especially the youngsters still get influenced easily to start smoking.

People who smoke portray a bad attitude of himself. They will be less respected by others. Other people will look down to smokers, and judge them as a non-serious person. For school students, if they smoke, they will get a greater punishment by the society. They will be labelled as naughty boys. They will be associated to any other disciplinary problems such as gangsterism, vandalism as well as drug addiction.

Research shows smoking leads to drugs. Students who smoke during their schooldays always end up being a drug addict. When you become a drug addict, you contribute to a bigger problem to the society. Drug addict has the tendency to commit crime in order to get money to buy drugs. This act will create an uneasy environment in the society.

Besides, smoking students also tend to bully other students to get their money to buy cigarettes. Usually, the senior smoking students will bully their junior in this kind of situation. As we all know, bully has been a major problem in most schools in our country. Pupils who got bullied will experience fear, oppressed and grow up being a person with inferiority complex. Not many of us know that behind the bully problem lays another problem which is smoking among school students.

Another problem caused by smoking students is of course a health problem. Smokers obviously are less healthy than the non-smokers. They are exposed to dangerous disease such as cancer. Unhealthy citizens can not contribute more to the country. In fact, the country needs to bear the cost of their medication and hospitalization. What a waste!

Ways to overcome smoking among secondary students

Discussion about the discipline problems among the tenagers especially secondary students are regarding the smoking problems. Therefore, problem solving strategy should be focus on these students. Here are some of the ways to overcome this problems:

Firstly, the role of the parents are so important in giving more serious attention towards their children. Parents should often supervise the movements of their children whether at home or elsewhere. They must know and identify problems their children are having especially when influenced by the children’s friend. Parents should know with whom their children making friends with and thus they socialized with friends with good manner. Other than this, parents should spend more of their time daily with their children with giving more confidence, courage, establish a positive attitude towards problem they might facing, emotion and in decision making. If parents are a religious people, their children could be educated to be more on religion matter. This will helps the children or students in willing to accept their weaknesses and explore their on potential creativity in handling prblems. Parents should become a role model to their children. The Teachers and Parents Association (PIBG) must be active and always have a meeting in discussing discipline problem occurs among the student and fing a concrete conclusion in handling each matter such as smoking.

Secondly, through academic approach. This can be done with adding more activities in school. In Physical Education, student are taught how important it is to have a healthy life. Here, teachers should advise their students why smoking is not a right way to stay healthy. It can damage the lung and can cause first step towards drug abuse. In school, students are educate to follow the rules set by the authority in school based on the guide line by Ministry Of Education. Smoking is one of the offense which can cause the students to get punish if they are guilty in doing it. Some schools propose a campaign to avoid smoking among students through poster desingning or drawing, seminar and essay-writing competition. This activities suggested cab be a vital ways to educate the students and meant to play on these students mind, reminding them of what is going to happen to their bodies everytime they light up cigarettes. This also will detering potenail smoker among students from the habit. In other words, it is to help them make an educated choice not to smoke. It is important for them to see the damage smoking does to their body instead of just having someone standing there telling them it causes damage.

Thirdly, is the enforcement by the goverment. People must realise that smoking is damaging enough for the authorities to ban smoking in certain places. People who do not smoke alsa suffer from the smoke emittedby the smokers. Education and enforcement must work side by side . The Tak Nak! Campaign is the catalyst to get the whole nation to be involved in an active anti-smoking drive. Schools have been encouraged to use the Tak Nak! concept to take the campaign further, perhaps with the essay-writting or poster designing contest among students. In fact these students may have noticed on TV that a message appears at the bottom of the screen that warns people of the dangers of smoking whenever a character in a movie lights up a cigarette.

Finally, the promotional activities. The number of smoker in develop countries has decline but the number in developing countries is on the rise. In Malaysia, smokers are getting younger and younger. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, cigarettes promoters have linked smoking very closely to lifestyle, that it is part and parcel of the social scene and growing up. Therefore, kids grow up thinking that it is what they do in order to show that they have grown up and are independent. Also, many promotional activities of cigarette brands are linked to sports. So we see very healthy people who are in sports sponsored by cigarette brands. In developed countries, they are stricter with the law. Airports are non-smoking areas and entire buildings are designated non-smoking places. But in developing countries, laws of this nature are not very practiced.

Various steps can be and in fact have been implemented in handling smoking problems among secondary sudents. But the important matter is parents should play their vital role and must be responsible with the behaviour of their children. In other words, whatever steps we make but without the cooperation of the parent, it is really hard to overcome this smoking problems. Education and enforcement are two important elements in solving this problems and must work side by side.

Smoking addict

Nowadays, smoking addiction among secondary school becomes the higher rate in our country. There are so many factors that influence the teenagers to be a smoker. Many of them have affected by the factors that come from environment, community and also by themselves. This kind of problem will makes the teenagers become influence with these bad habits.

The main factors that influence the teenagers in this kind of problem are cause by their family. Some of the teenagers feel so pressure with their family problem. Usually, this problem comes from their parent. For the example, when their parent has been divorce, their children surely will be sad and pressure. That will make the teenagers feel lonely and feel like nobody cares about them and then causes the teenager feel to live with their own life. Therefore, teenagers will try to do something that can reduce their pressure. So, smoking is the easy way that they know to release the pressure. Unfortunately, they have made the big mistake. Smoking is not give them feel better but make them easier to get danger disease like lung cancer.

The second factor is cause by the influence by friends. These things usually happen when the teenagers mixed with adult people. They waste their time and get in the bad activities. They usually find the place that hide from other people. This problem will influence the teenager or student to absent from the class without any reasons. Friend becomes the second factor because teenagers usually refer to their friend then their family. This is because they have spent more time than with their own family.

Other than that, there are many advertisement about the cigarette that been have shown in television and other medium also be the factor for the teenager to smoke. The styles of famous model or person are easily to influence the teenagers to follow their style to smoke. Today, the government has takes the good way to overcome the problem of addict smoking by reducing the advertisement of cigarette in television.

After that, the natural feel of student like feel to know about something new is also the factor of smoking addiction among the teenager or secondary school. At first, they try to smoke because want to know the feel of smoking and also just for fun. But at last, they become addicted to smoke. This situation always happen because of in the family already has the smoker like their brother or father or they mixed with adult people that already smoking. This is bad behaviors or example that we should not show to the children or teenager. The older must be the good role model to the young people.

The last factor that influenced the teenager to smoke is because the not limited selling of cigarette. Although the government has strict the law but they are still have some of people that take more profit by selling the cigarette to the teenagers without worried to the next generation. Because of this, the teenagers easily can get the stock of cigarette at any shop without think the effect that will happen to them.
